im currently living on about 9 miles out from my school. i live about 1.3 miles from ralphs (it’s like coles), about 200m from a 7/11 and about 15m from the washing machines… (and about 3m from the fridge).
for me, i think this is a pretty sweet deal (id like to take this opportunity to thank my lovely host giang and not so lovely other host chris for helping me out… dinner’s on the table at 7pm). now, of the above five destinations, only one of these i feel, should be vehicle assisted. i would have thought in a state where there are 5 out of the top 25 fittest cities in the US (according to http://www.mensfitness.com) people would be inclined to go for a bit of a stroll from time to time. i mean, the weather’s gorgeous, things are fairly conveniently located and a bit of exercise does you good. right? WRONG!
asking three different people for directions each at approximately 1.3 miles, 0.8 miles and 0.3 miles (this was out of curiosity than not knowing where i was at this stage), all three had dialogues similar to the following:
r: gday! was just wondering if you knew where the nearest ralphs is. i know its on olympic…
antiwalk: ralphs is down that way, past the stretch and it’s on your right.
r: sweet, so it’s walking distance then.
antiwalk: oooh gosh, i dunno about that. dont you have a car?
r: no, it’s fine i’ll get there, thanks a lot!
now, when i asked if it was walking distance, the dialogue changed somewhat (and sure, there may be a few fallacies… but its like 90% what the exchange was like), but as we all know, communication is but 7% (according to some guy) what you say. the other 93% was always the same. they looked at me as if i were fucking insane. i mean gosh, the shock and horror. WALKING to the supermarket. and if consistency rings true, the last person would consider driving to the 7/11 from where i live.
THEN AGAIN, i get this is a poor indicator of fitness/laziness. if i did have a car, and i wasn’t such a cheapskate, id probably drive too. and who knows, perhaps this isn’t an american thing. perhaps i should ask some mexicans.
goal for “the time being” – phone card… it’s tougher than you think
sup readers. i dont know how long ill continue to update this thing as regularly as this; i guess it depends on whether or not funny/amusing/politically incorrect can continue to happen.
i went to a show of some aada graduates tonight. i was fucking blown away. these guys are incredible. over the last few years thanks to careful and close collaboration with jonathan prescott (who ill refer to now as jp) ive gotten to a point where ive a fair knowledge of acting theory. ive a fair eye for acting talent, and what makes for good acting. i tell you what i saw tonight, was some exceptional work. i did not expect the standard to be this high. gauntlets been thrown down.
i ate at carls tonight. that fast food was so dirty the guy taking my order almost shook his head as i picked something randomly from the menu almost as if to say “what’re you doing here man?”.
chris gave me a ride home after the show. we discussed the possibility of my buying a cheap bike to get to and from class. this idea seemed feasible right up until we saw a group of thugs in singlets arguing outside where id be parking my bike.
instead, the conversation switched to the driver in front who had cut us off; but was not being blocked off by the car in front of them. as if indicating the wrong way over unbroken lines wasn’t bad enough, the car in front was now preventing us from making our lights. chris is normally a fairly docile guy. so imagine my surprise as he began spewing profanities at the driver in front, and horning generously before proceeding to flip off the drivers in front with vigor only to realise that the drivers were 80 years old. chris gave them the bird once more for good measure.
goal for today – phone card
1. there are more veterinary clinics than hospitals. no shit, they are on every corner in hollywood and westwood. wtf.
2. dont get on a bus without change. i tried this today and got kicked off. fuck him.
3. white castle isn’t good enough to warrant a movie.
4. in and out burger is.
5. people here are genuinely friendly (except for that satan’s spawn bus driver).
all in all, things so far have been good. im not doing my body clock any favours with my sleeping patterns, but for now, ill sleep when im tired, and stay up when otherwise. my room here that chris is so generously letting me use is more than adequate. i dont have any furniture, but i do have some blankets and some weights now (someone pointed out i saw this as a higher priority to furniture – ollie, THERE’S commitment to fitness).
goal for today – clean up room.
whatever it is, it’s not going to be discovered at 1am the night, half asleep, packing my bags and tidying up my room for the last time.
welcome reader. this is going to be a stripped down, and for the most part PG version of my journal following any mildly entertaining stories through the next year (and perhaps beyond should apathy not strike me down). when i say mildly, that could entail exciting information on auditions, people i meet, or even more exciting details of hotly anticipated fast foods i intend to destroy.
goal for today – pack.
